CHANNEL SUBSCRIPTIONS

Project Overview

The Channel Subscriptions project aimed to enhance the platform’s video content accessibility by introducing a clear, user-friendly subscription model. Users would have the option to choose from monthly, 3-month, 6-month, or yearly subscription plans, each granting access to exclusive content from creators. The goal was to boost user engagement, streamline access to premium content, and offer flexible plans to accommodate different viewing habits and budgets.

Problem Statement

Before this project, users found it challenging to understand how to access premium content, often feeling uncertain about the benefits of subscribing. Furthermore, the absence of clear subscription tiers hindered creators’ ability to monetize effectively. Our challenge was to design an intuitive subscription system that highlighted the value of each plan and simplified the process for users to sign up and enjoy exclusive content.

Pain Points

Payment Failures

The customer tries to pay his subscription charges at a certain time but fails.

Data Security

Most of the online recurring bills are paid through bank account cards. The customer is required to share sensitive payment information with the online payment system.

Management of Discounts and Promotions

Sometimes customers prefer discounts or offers associated with upgraded plans for some time and later cancel them and move back to the subscription package that they were previously using.

User Research & Insights

To inform the design process, we conducted user interviews and surveys to understand user preferences around paid content access. Our research revealed a diverse set of needs: some users preferred affordable, short-term access, while others sought the best value through long-term subscriptions. Additionally, users emphasized the importance of transparent pricing, ease of cancelation, and a clear outline of subscription benefits. This insight guided us in designing distinct subscription options that catered to various user expectations.

User Personas

Based on our research, we created user personas to represent the typical subscriber. For example, “Mia” is a frequent viewer who values flexibility, preferring shorter subscription plans that she can renew as needed. Meanwhile, “Liam” is an avid fan of specific creators, choosing a yearly subscription for the best long-term value. Each persona helped clarify the needs and motivations driving subscription choices, ensuring the design met the needs of all user types.

Design Strategy & Goals

The design strategy focused on presenting subscription options in a clear, compelling way that encouraged users to commit to a plan that suited them best. We aimed to showcase the cost savings of longer-term plans while emphasizing the flexibility of the shorter options. Key goals included establishing a streamlined onboarding process, creating visual clarity around subscription benefits, and designing a system where users could easily switch or upgrade their plans if desired.

Channel Settings Requirements

Quickly Turn On/Off channel settings and base all channel options with the monthly subscription price. Enabling channel settings, monthly price is required. 3 month, 6 month and yearly subscriptions will be optional. By selecting other than monthly give the option to put a custom price or percentage.

Profile Page and Video Cards Requirements

User can subscribe to a tutor from their profile page. A video must contain a badge or icon showing that it can only be viewed with a subscription plan. Add a modal that the user can subscribe without leaving the page.

Outcome and Impact

The redesigned subscription model led to a 7% increase in sign-ups within the first month. User feedback highlighted the ease of understanding the plan options, with many noting they felt more confident about subscribing. Creators reported a boost in engagement as more users were willing to commit to accessing exclusive content. These results underscored the effectiveness of our approach, validating the value of a user-centered subscription system.
